Audio players come in various shapes and sizes, making it difficult to choose which one you will use most of the time. Any one of them can play audio files, but not all of them can play as many as Spider Player. This lightweight application offers some interesting features and it can recognize and play nearly thirty different audio formats, including popular ones like MP3, WMA, WAV, OGG and others.

You can get the player for free and you will not have to wait too long for it. The package is 3.39 Mb large and the installation process will go fast and smoothly. You can opt either for a standard installation or a portable one which will store the configuration data in the application's folder, instead of the registry.

Spider Player looks and feels a lot like other popular players, such as Winamp. You can find a main panel with playback options, a playlist and an equalizer. Audio files can be added in the list by clicking and dragging them from an explorer window, or browsing for individual files or whole folders from the interface. The features which make Spider Player different are subtle, but they will come in very handy. You can convert an audio file at any time by right clicking one or more selected entries on the playlist and clicking the Convert option. A new window will show up where you can start the process immediately by clicking a large button on the toolbar. A file can be converted to MP3, WAV, WMA, OGG, or FLAC and you can choose one of these formats from the player's main settings window. A button on the converter's toolbar will let you access the settings window immediately, without having to return to the main interface.

You can also use the player to rip audio CDs. This feature can be launched from the player's main menu which can be accessed by clicking a button on the upper left corner of the interface. Ripping a CD works the same way as converting files. The player will automatically detect the audio tracks on the CD and you can select which one to convert. Finally, click the large Convert button on the toolbar and the ripping will begin.

One of the most interesting features this player has to offer is recording online radio. The Radio option, in the main menu, will bring up a window where you can search for radio stations in Shoutcast and Icecast directories. The stations will be displayed in a list and double clicking one of them will bring it in the playlist. When you play an added channel, a record button will be made available on the application's main controls window. Clicking it will start recording that station and the output folder can be specified from the main settings window.

Pros

This lightweight player can support a lot of audio formats and the sound quality is quite good. It also lets you convert or rip audio tracks and record radio stations. All can be done from a very simple and easy to understand interface.

Cons

Some features like converting or ripping multiple audio tracks at once are available only if you upgrade the player to the Pro version. Spider Player will suit all your needs when it comes to quality sounds and powerful features. With its user friendly interface, you can find and use them without any difficulties.
